Afternoon Tea is served in a charming lop-sided cottage, placed in the beautiful surroundings of the Boyne Valley, Co. Meath. For as little as €40 for two, you can choose from a selection of cakes, freshly baked scones with clotted cream and homemade jam, finger sandwiches and desserts – with Gluten Free and Vegetarian options available too. And just look at the decor – rustic country farmhouse style with so much character and charm.

Tankardstown House: Gluten Free Afternoon Tea Experience

Afternoon tea in Tankardstown is a wonderful day out for both adults and children.

My partner and I recently brought the boys, age 10 and 11 to experience the fashionable English ritual from the 1800s. Smoked salmon and egg mayonnaise sandwiches aren’t the typical snack for pre teens but with fine china in hand and pinkies held high, both boys embraced the traditional tea reception and really enjoyed it too. Before long their bellies were full with pastries, cakes, scones and small finger sized sandwiches, with the crust removed of course. The boys skipped the tea and opted for hot chocolate smothered with mini marshmallows. I, on the other hand, opted for a glass of prosecco – don’t mind if I do!

For those with special dietary requirements, there is a special gluten-free afternoon tea menu. I’m a struggling coeliac so when I see GF on the menu I get very excited. And the GF option is just as tasty as their “normal” option.

The bite-sized cakes and delicate little sandwiches with the crusts removed were delicious and were a similar selection to the normal option. The warm GF scone, with homemade preserves and fresh cream was scrumptious. My compliments to the baker.
