In 2014 I was one of the lucky winners of the Big Blog Exchange 2014. I had the opportunity to backpack around Brazil for two weeks, staying in a number of Hostelling International hostels. The Albergue Praia Do Forte Hostel, Salvador was the third hostel I had the pleasure of staying in.
Praia Do Forte reminds me of an all-inclusive beach resort. The town is tiny, everywhere seems to be in walking distance and the locals are super friendly. The moment I stepped foot in the Albergue hostel in Praia do Forte, I was in love. It reminded me of an oversized tropical treehouse, one you might see in a Tarzan movie.
When I checked in, I was asked if I wanted a dorm or a private room. I’m not sure if I was being polite or indecisive, but at first I replied “I don’t mind”! Then, after a few seconds of thought, I quickly came to my senses and whispered, “private, obrigada”! Both members of the Hostel staff laughed at my sudden changed of mind!
I was shown to a non-smoking room with private bathroom and shower. My private room also had air-conditioning which is only available in some of the rooms – I got lucky!
The reception area with cybercafé access.
Free wifi too – yippee!
The hostel offers a daily buffet breakfast and self-catering kitchen.
One of the most memorable and welcoming experiences during my hostelling international adventure in Brazil was meeting a super friendly family on holiday from Brasilia. The family was also staying in the hostel and the mother of the clan noticed I was on my own and insisted that I join them for some home cooked brazilian cuisine. She didn’t speak a word of english so her daughter, who was probably my age, did all the translating. The food wasn’t quite suited to my palate – but I gave it a go and had a great laugh with a table full of Brazilians, with only one speaking limited english.
Game-room with TV
Caipirinha
Caipirinha is Brazil’s national cocktail, made with cachaça (sugar cane hard liquor), sugar and fruit, most commonly lime.
The hostel is a 5-minute walk from a huge selection of restaurants, ice-cream parlors and shops. There are so many restaurants to choose from you’ll be spoiled for choice. You’ll never have to dine in the same place twice!
The local people in the town were amazing and really friendly, I even joined them for a game of dominoes.
The Albergue Praia Do Forte Hostel is a 5 minute walk from Forte Beach.
Upon arrival at the hostel, I was given a green hostel wrist band which guaranteed free entry into the Projecto Tamar, which is only a ten minute walk from the Albergue Hostel. The Projeto TAMAR is a Brazilian non-profit organization. The main objective of the project is to protect sea turtles from extinction in the Brazilian coastline and it’s well worth the visit!
I was also given the directions to Portomar tour agency which is next door to the hostel, it’s literally, a two minute walk. I’ll have a full blog post with all the details coming soon!
My parting mirror selfie 🙂
