Mercado de Atarazanas: The Most Impressive Market in Málaga

I love a good ramble through the market when I’m travelling abroad. The atmosphere, the fresh food, the people behind the stalls, not to mention the colourful photo opportunities. Out of the 15 markets in Málaga, Mercado de Atarazanas just might be the most impressive local produce market of them all. Have a look-see through an array of Spanish delights, from manteca de cerdo (lard), olive oils, sun-dried tomatoes and hummus to a selection of cheeses, cured meats and anchovies, snack on good food surrounded by friendly faces.

I’m going to let you in on a little secret, the reason I wrote this blog post was so that I could share all these photos with you…

During your stroll through the market, stop intermittently at the stalls, where you will savour the rich flavours of the fresh products on display. I sampled fresh fruit including dates, grapes and fresh oranges, I also tasted a number of different olives – my fav, I eat olives by the jar!

During my trip to the famous Spanish market, I joined a group of hungry tourist on a foodie trail with the Spain Food Sherpas.

We discovered the real Spanish foodie scene in Málaga, on the culinary tour of the stunning city. Accompanied by a gastronomic guide,  we experienced cultural delights and sampled local delicacies. Our tour guide explained the cultural traditions of the country, where the produce is sourced from, and also filled us in on some hidden foodie gems. If you’re only in Málaga for a few days, it’s definitely worth booking the tour as you cover lots of ground within a short space of time.

Pig’s head, pig’s tongue and pig’s trotters.

Pig’s trotters are considered as one of the most delicious parts on pig, I’m sure they’re lovely but I won’t be trying them anytime soon.
