Situated on the Main Street in Manorhamilton, Gurns Milestone Pub is a family run country pub known for its good food and friendly welcome. This traditional local watering hole is the kind of place where everyone knows each other on a first name basis. It’s where neighbours meet for a few pints, where you can do a business lunch or go for a few scoops after work with your pals. Everyone is welcome in Gurns.
During my visit to Gurns I sat in the bar area which is separate to the lounge, pool room and the partially enclosed beer garden. The bar stools were packed with entertaining characters, the pints were flowing and local Drumshanbo Gunpowder gin was being passed around the table. Banter, laughter and chatter could be heard throughout the bar area. I got the feeling that a late night sing-song and lock-in could be just around the corner. Before long, I was up behind the bar pulling pints and serving the locals their usual tipple. This was all in the name of fun and pub owner, Phelim, gave it the ok. When in Manorhamilton, do as the locals do.
With tasty bar food served daily and the option of a takeaway, there were a number of people enjoying a delicious hot dinner before they made their way home after work. The traditional menu consists of home-cooked pub food along with a wide range of hearty meals and daily specials. The portions are generous and the food is served piping hot.

I was super impressed when the barman handed me a dedicated gluten-free menu. I was even more impressed with the varied selection of coeliac friendly options. Most items on the regular menu could easily be made gluten-free too.
Having the separate menu is a great step to earning more customers and generating interest among coeliacs – it offers convenience and peace of mind. Once word gets out that you have a gluten-free menu, gluten-free diners in the area will likely stop by and check it out.
The Only Traffic Lights in Leitrim
Gurns Milestone Pub, Manorhamilton is somewhat of a tourist attraction in Leitrim as it’s home to the only set of traffic lights in the entire county. This may sound completely shocking to you, but it’s true. Traffic lights had been installed in the county previously in 2003, but were later removed so who knows how long this set will last?!
Some locals say that the Gurns family petitioned to have them installed, so that people would pop in for a quick dink while they were waiting for the lights to change. I’ve met proprietor, Phelim Gurn and I wouldn’t put it past him – he’s a gas man.
Gurns Milestone Pub is a fantastic homely pub that offers excellent value and quality Irish pub grub. The atmosphere is great and the staff are some of the best I’ve come across in Ireland.
