Going on holiday with your other half is romantic but let’s be honest, a holiday with the girls is sometimes just the ticket! Whether you’re sipping red wine in Paris or devouring burgers in New York, nothing is better than a city break with your girlfriends.
If you and your friends would like a little bit of inspiration for 2017, here are three of the best city break destinations available through online agents like Travel Republic. All you’ll need to do is choose the location that takes your fancy, buy a few new items for your holiday wardrobe and count down the days to a fantastic getaway together.
The City of Love – Paris
Sure, Paris is famous for lovers, but it’s also a location that’s perfect for celebrating the bond you share as friends too. As well as seeing sights such as the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, treat yourselves to tickets for the Moulin Rouge; it’s pricey but jaw-droppingly impressive and great fun – you’ll kick yourselves if you go all the way to Paris and miss something as iconic as this!
Consider checking out La Trémoille too. It used to be the jazz scene in Paris, and it’s where Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington used to meet, making it the perfect place to shimmy into your most sparkly dresses, slick on red lipstick and sip cocktails together to the backdrop of elegant, Parisian jazz.
The shopping in Paris is world-renowned too, but the best advice is perhaps to not plan too much. You can’t see and do everything in Paris in one trip, but you can certainly soak in the best of it during a city break. Simply hang out on a café terrace and watch the Parisians whizz by: drink coffee together, share wine and indulge in pastries, snapping a few photos to remember it all.
The Eternal City – Rome
If you and the girls are history buffs, there’s no better place to go than Rome. The Eternal City is breathtakingly beautiful with ancient architecture such as the Pantheon and the Colosseum to see, but the nightlife is good too if you’d like some cocktails afterwards.
Skip sitting in restaurants to dine al fresco instead, sharing fine Italian wine and splitting authentic pizzas and dishes of the most delicious pasta you’ve ever eaten. A group selfie at the Trevi Fountain is a must, and the day trip to Pompeii from Rome is perfect for those of you who like to try something new while you’re on holiday. The tour includes a hike up Mount Vesuvius, a walking tour of casts of Pompeii’s ancient inhabitants, a visit to the museum, and a stop in Naples for pizza.
The Big Apple – New York City
NYC is without a doubt the most exciting city in the world; it’s home of Sex and the City and offers some of the very best shopping and dining on the planet. Make sure you all pack your comfiest walking shoes as much of NYC is best explored on foot. You’ll experience the weird and wonderful this way, including sights, shops and people who really make New York City what it is.
That said, if budget allows, a helicopter ride is incredible and will be a memory you’ll share forever. Head to the High Line (a mile and a half long park built on an old railway line that’s 30ft up in the air); visitors in the know recommend skipping the High Line during the day as it’s busy, but if you head there in the early evening before the sun sets, it’ll be a little quieter and you’ll enjoy incredible sunset views.
Finally, a walk along Brooklyn Bridge is worth doing too – look back and you’ll enjoy some of the best views of Manhattan skyline (great for Instagram, and a fantastic photograph to take to remember your trip), and the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory is nearby if you need a quick pick-me-up afterwards.
So, will you and the girls be heading off to any of these destinations for a city break this year? Paris is atmospheric, Rome is beautiful and New York City is buzzing with energy – and a place with excellent taste, too!
